New paintings

New paintings on newspaper prints

Did four paintings since last week. Discovered newspapers to be good base for painting. Tried working with pen & ink and watercolour. These papers are really nice. They absorb the paints easily and gives dull inward feeling once dried. I think the black lines with whites thrown in between have made the paintings more fairytale like.

Newspapers give a feel of immediacy, a certain 'now'ness as also a sense of decaying. A slow feel of getting worn out. While I painted I realised the straight and curved black lines, the chiaroscuro's and the streaks of colours here and there on the shadowy backdrop of greying 18 pt/12pt streams of letters can create a kind of distant magic that is real as well as unreal at the same time.

I painted this about five years ago. When I started off with this one I focussed more on color fields, predominantly green with different tones, and tried to explore their interplay. During the process a few birds with stretched out wings started emerging within the painting. I think the movements expressed here acted as secrets to their unfolding flights. Whatever it was, I kept it like that and named the painting " Wings in birth"
